What do you have when the Twitter account of one of the biggest software corporations on the face of the planet issues a tweet instructing you not to read Microsoft emails? Very simple. The account got hacked. Thanks to the Syrian Electronic Army, Microsoft’s official Twitter account, Microsoft News got hit. Not only did the hackers poke fun at Microsoft but it also poked fun at the US Government. According to the tweet, users should not use any of Microsoft emails like Outlook or Hotmail. Why? According to the tweet, they are monitoring users accounts and selling the data to government. Hash tag of SEA or the Syrian Electronic Army was included in the tweet.
This is not exactly new, Syrian Electronic Army has hit Microsoft properties before. In fact, on New Year’s day, it attacked Skype’s Twitter account. As for other companies, Facebook’s account was also hit by the Syrian Electronic Army. While this kind of cyber shenanigans might take for a great water cooler talk among people who work for security software companies and security blogs. It does raise key issues regarding the security protocol of Twitter and other popular social media platforms.
