According to research done by world leading anti-virus software developer, Bitdefender, the Hollywood celebrity, Jennifer Aniston, beat out Miley Cyrus and Rihanna and Selena Gomez as the most popular and effective lure used by spammers.
How does Jennifer Aniston figure in all of this? Well, Jennifer Anniston’s name is used by junk mailers to get people to open their junk mail. These junk mail have all sorts of fake promo codes or fake sexual content. These emails trick recipients into clicking a link. Once the recipient clicks that link, the recipient is redirected to an attack website. The attack website will then install malware into the poor victims computer.
What’s so bad about this malware? It can do all sorts of things. At the very least, it can record your key strokes so it can steal your banking information, your paypal account information, your passwords, so on and so forth. At the very worst, it can actually turn your computer into an active participant in global cyber criminal activities. This can range from sending further malware spam to other people, launching distributed denial of service attacks on websites, sending child pornography, and other illegal activities.
Regardless, if you receive email that has the name of a celebrity, be very very suspicious. Always have your anti-spywre application updated and try to avoid clicking links that you don’t trust.
