Still Require FTP? Try Filezilla

Filezilla Product Summary

Even though some say FTP servers are not as essential as they were back then, there are still circumstances when you might call for an FTP session. And here’s when an FTP client enters.

Filezilla is an Open Source FTP client compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux and BSD. This software lets you connect to an FTP-access enabled server. Filezilla allows quick and easy transfer of files from one FTP server to another, upload and download files and complete basic procedures such as changing file attributes. These can all be done with the use of its drag-and-drop interface.

Filezilla Features

Filezilla could support FTP, FTPS and SFTP protocols. It is cross-platform, which means that it can be accessed using Windows and Mac, as well as Linux and BSD operating systems. This main feature makes your users at ease no matter what operation system they use. The software is able to resume and transfer files of up to 4 GB, bookmark, filter filenames, search and edit remote files and compare directory content.

Filezilla has multi-language support, IPv4 and IPv6 support, Network Configuration Wizard, synchronized directory browsing, and easy-to-use drag and drop, tabbed interface.  In addition, this FTP client has a time-out detection feature, upload and download queue, and GSS authentication and encryption. Another feature that makes Filezilla stand out among other FTP clients is that it can be used as a server for Windows.

Filezilla User Interface

One thing you might be looking for an FTP client is accessibility. Not all clients have an easy to use interface. Luckily, Filezilla lets you transfer files to and fro one server to another using an easy drag and drop maneuver. The software has a drag and drop tabbed interface which makes it simpler to operate. That’s a big plus, since not all FTP clients are easy to navigate. This system is recommended for new FTP client users.

Filezilla requires at least an XP, Vista or 7 for Windows; 10.5 and up for OS X. It is especially built for a Debian Linux, but it is still possible to use it with any other Linux distribution.

Filezilla Software Review

If you are looking for a reliable FTP client, maybe Filezilla will work just fine for you. It has cross-platform ability, which makes your users comfortable regardless of the platform they employ. In addition, it has a number of features to offer. Filezilla is also very easy to use. Just connect it to a server which is FTP access enabled and you are ready to go.

The downside is that Filezilla, along with other FTP clients, are becoming harder to sell.  Some call this system ‘old-fashioned’, but others still call for FTPs for their file-sharing needs. Another thing is that this particular software is somehow difficult to connect to a secure server. And although it has a multi-platform feature, Filezilla is not capable of connecting to multiple servers.

All in all, feature-wise, Filezilla can compete with other FTP clients. If you or your company still requires a standard FTP client, you might as well try using it if you are not looking for one that can connect to multiple servers.

When you need to upload large multi-media files to your server, cPanel is way too slow. Often cPanel direct uploads are limited to a certain size, as well, depending on how your host has it set up. When that happens, you need a good FTP program and I haven't found one better than FileZilla. Once you establish your FTP connection, it takes just a second to drag the file you want to upload from one pane to another and then it's on your server in no time. Even the largest uploads take only a couple minutes.

I mainly use my cPanel to upload files to my server so I rarely need an FTP program. But if you've been webmastering for any length of time, you know that there are times where it's much easier to use an FTP program. Sometimes files are too large to do through cPanel, for one thing.

FileZilla is the easiest to use FTP program that I've tried. Easy to install and set up, my only difficulty was getting the right information in initially as it wasn't particularly intuitive when I was brand new. However, once it's set up, the drag and drop ease of transferring files is terrific.
