Tumblr is a Blog Service for Web Publishers, Writers, Individuals and maintained by Tumblr, Inc.
Tumblr Summary
Tumblr is a blog service / micro blogging tool that offers people a good start before jumping right into the serious blogging world. This platform is more visual than textual, as images dominate the posts more than long blocks of readable content. It offers free hosting for all types of users, beginners or advanced, so this means that everyone has an equal access to great features. However, advanced users might feel that something is lacking because the tool does not permit much configuration and control, especially if they have previously used WordPress or Blogger.
Tumblr Features
Tumblr registration is easy as long as you are a human, since there is captcha registration required. Upon successful registration, you will be brought to a blue page where you can opt to create your first post or perform some appearance customization.
The former lets you post texts, photos, quotes, links, chats, audios, and videos, and you can add a short description about the post. The latter leads you to a gray control panel where you can alter the theme of your blog, edit the HTML coding, add a title and a description, and change the background color. There are also options for the text type for the title and body, and you can upload your header and background image.
There are boxes you can tick if you want to show on your page the people you follow, the tags, the album art and audio podcasts, or enable jump navigation. The advanced options allow you to designate the number of posts that a page can contain, to optimize mobile layout, to open a link in a new window, to have descriptive URLs, and to promote Tumblr by showing the “Follow” button on your page.
When you post something, you have the option to publish it right away, add it to a queue, publish it on a certain date, save it as a draft, or set it as private. You can also include the content source of the post if it is lifted from a different source. Also, you can put tags, allow people to photo reply, and set a custom post URL. You can make unlimited posts for everything except for the audio upload, which only allows one upload per day of an MP3 not exceeding 10MB. Videos can be embedded from a source or uploaded, while audio can be searched via SoundCloud or lifted from an external source. Captions are optional for both audios and videos.
Users can also install tracking like google analytics to measure traffic and other statistics of your blog as well as monetize from it with advertising of different kinds.
Tumblr User Interface
Tumblr sports a clean and spacious look, and the interface is light, given that the page does not contain too many slideshows and videos. It is easy to learn for beginners, and the default options to make your blog good to go are already set for you. The dashboard, preferences, help, and logout buttons are located on the top-right corner, which allows easy access to the behind-the-scenes of the blog.
Tumblr Review
Tumblr is the right option for people who are not really into writing, but want to share thoughts and happenings in their life. It is good to setup an account if you want to follow certain people inside you social circle, or celebrities you are fond of. However, it is not recommended for bloggers and marketers just because of its limits but anyone with a tumblr blog can put up advertising like google adsense, buysellads or sell products from affiliate programs. It can otherwise be connected to an existing full-blown blog as a way for your audience or customers to immediately know about your updates.
Tumblr only requires a light learning curve, and you only need to check out everything for a few minutes in order to get the right feel of things. Beginners should try this one out first before building a blog as it introduces stuff like posting, tagging, and preferences changing. If you have tried powerful blogging platforms, getting to Tumblr is very easy and you can set up an account in minutes.
