SquareSpace is a Blog Service for Web Publishers, Writers, Individuals, Businesses and maintained by Squarespace, Inc.

Squarespace Summary

If you have tried all free website builders but did not quite get what you want, then you might find Squarespace the perfect partner for you. Squarespace is not much heard of compared with WordPress or Weebly, but in terms of functionality and deliverability, it is certainly at par with these famous ones.

Sophisticated—this is what others say about this robust site builder. It is like a simple thing that surprises you on the inside. It is available for a free trial, but you have to subscribe once the period lapses; the builder is not offered for free, sad to say. That is perhaps they only want to attract serious bloggers or site creators who are willing to create a full-fledged site, and not those who just drop by to try them out. Brace yourselves, for you need some getting-to-know time with Squarespace before you can be friends with it.

Squarespace Features

All Squarespace accounts, since all of them are paid, are loaded with core features that include cloud hosting, analytics, content management system, visual style designer, and widgets and modules. The Personal account is limited to only 20 pages, with a 1TB bandwidth and 3GB storage space, but the Advanced and Business accounts have all these specs set to unlimited. All accounts get custom domain and unlimited support, but unlimited editors, advanced controls, and audiences are available for the premium accounts. The Business package offers three additional features: user registration, form builder, and business features.

Squarespace makes everyone his or her own website designer. If this is not your first time to test a website builder, you will easily get accustomed with how the controls work. The good thing about the service is that all changes occur real-time, so once you change the layout, color, size, or anything on your interface, the results are viewable right away, allowing you to tweak your site to your liking faster. The drag-and-drop control allows even faster organization, and on-site editing lets you quickly add or edit your content. Being creative is always easy, and if ever you do not find a fitting template, you can select a blank slate and build your own site from zero. Code editing is also possible, so you can alter the standard options provided anytime.

Squarespace also lets you manage your site and check visitors, page ranks, and other matters. Of course, you can be social with the Twitter, Flickr, and RSS plugins. The program is also available for the iPad and iPhone, giving you on-the-go opportunities for developing and managing your site. Despite these great features, Squarespace’s interface is only English, although the editor supports any language. E-commerce solutions need to be improved as well, and popular payment solutions like PayPal should be made available, especially for business sites.

Squarespace User Interface

The user interface is probably one of the best ones out there. The controls function properly and fast, not sluggish at all, so creating your site can definitely be quick. The background is grainy grayish by default, but you can alter it right away by choosing your template. The controls can be found easily when you need them, and you will really like that you are given so much freedom to alter up to the smallest detail of your site.

Squarespace Review

Squarespace is a premium website builder that really speaks sophistication. The offering of all accounts for a fee only means that you can get the best site-building mechanisms out there. Although you cannot make a site by just signing up with your subdomain, email, and password (you need to point your current domain to it), it is definitely worth the money if you think of the great features and support offered. The good thing is that you can cancel anytime, unless you subscribe for the annual plan.

Squarespace is excellent for those who don't know any coding or how to create websites. Unlike free blog spaces like Blogger, Squarespace gives you incredible flexibility and customization options without having to know how to code or have to add in a ton of outside plugins.

I would only recommend it for a personal site, though, as it is a lot more expensive than it needs to be for the advanced or business options. The business option is $40 per month, which is a lot when you can purchase hosting elsewhere for under $10 per month and simply have the site designed for you.

Overpriced for anything but a simple personal site

SquareSpace is not a bad blogging platform for someone who isn't very tech-savvy or just needs a basic blog. It's easy to use and easy to figure out. For me, though, I outgrew it rather quickly as I needed more features than they offer. SquareSpace just doesn't have the flexibility and options that some other blogging platforms do. For someone new to blogging, it is an excellent way to get the hang of how the web works and if it's only for a simple blog, this may be all you ever need.
