    Default Wireless Range ?

    Hi,
I am having a dell laptop with wireless card. And a D-link wireless router.
I would like to know the range of wi-fi because my house is quite big.
Whether i will be able to use internet 2 floors above the place where modem is placed?

You can use internet without any disturbances. But i think that the length of the wire may disturb the availaibility of the internet connection. What i mean is that, your modem may restart at times lagging with connection

    Hey,
The normal range of a wireless router is around 100meters( In Open Area ). Rest the range depends upon the enviornment... If your house is big and you are using your laptop at second floor then it is a bit difficult that the wireless range could reach there due to various factors disturbing the signal like concrete walls, electricity wires, other electronic appliances etc...So here are few steps to make the range better...
1.) Make sure your router is configured at B-Mode and not at mixed mode... As B-Mode is for signal strength..
2.) Try placing the router at the centre point of your house from where your whole house can be covered... You can check it by pinging the router...
3.) If both above mentioned steps did'nt worked then you can add up a wireless Access point bridged with the router. Every router and access point has a property by which they can communicate with each other which is called bridging...

I would go with a router of course on your connection to your ISP. Then you will have to go with a cat5 connected outdoor directional antennae - like the ones made by Hawking. They claim ranges of up to 1/2 mile. Tiger Direct has the antennae that you would need.
This would be a lot cheaper - reliable - able to extend your range than with a signal booster antennae.

Wireless routers, access points, and adapters send and receive radio wave signals through antennas. The antenna is hidden inside adapters, but on routers and access points there's a visible antenna. Radio waves can be focussed like a lightbulb. And like a light, some materials reduce or stop radio waves. While light focused from several lights is brighter and makes it easier to see, several antennas in the same area cause interference — the radio signals will be muddy and confused.

You will most likely try with g
you may want to set the router to transmit g only ( not mixed)
Some people get better reception that way
You may have to move your laptop over even a foot from time to time.

It depends upon the router and range, but i think most routers you can have atleast 2 floors away and with luck 3 floors.

As your house quite big, you can get an extra 'WiFi Range Extender' that would give you smooth connection anywhere your house. You need only a few parts for this project and they all are pretty cheap except for the USB WIFI adaptor. (you can have them by only $10 or around)

    1 - Metal Strainer/Steamer
    1 - USB WIFI Adaptor
    1 - USB Extension Cable (I chose a 10ft long)
½” Drill Bit (I like to use stepper bits for metal)
Gorilla Glue (Epoxy works well too)
    2 - Zip Ties
